Reid backs 20k troops -- BUT ONLY FOR RETREAT

The NBC evening news (and the WaPo) played up their favorite theme, the idea that "the Democrats are in disarray!", yet again today, by highlighting a difference between Harry Reid and several other key Democratic Senators on how best to get our troops home before the end of next year.

The people in the GOP/Media Complex were hoping that this scam of "let's you and him fight" would drive a wedge between the netroots and Reid. And to judge by the sounds in the netroots tonight, their scam worked perfectly.

More after the jump.

To wit:  Harry Reid said that he would back anything, including Bush's proposed "temporary surge", IF (and that's a big 'if') it helped get us out of Iraq before the end of 2007.  Other prominent Democratic Senators, such as Ted Kennedy and Jack Reed, disagreed with Reid on backing the surge, but agree with him on wanting us out of Iraq.

That's really what this is all about, once you drain off all the aggro and shouting and rending of garments by people who were looking for a reason to reflexively diss a Democratic politician.

Reid and Kennedy agree that we need to leave Iraq, and soon.  They just disagree on how best to do it.

If anyone actually listened to all of what Reid was saying, they'd note that he said he favored anything that actually would help get our troops safely out of Iraq by the end of 2007. But too many of them stopped listening after hearing him give (a HEAVILY CONDITIONAL) quasi-support to it.  There are too many people who just reflexively jump down Democrats' throats for any percieved deviation from propriety.

The thing is that we may very well need an extra 20K troops to ensure a smooth withdrawal, as opposed to a chaotic fighting retreat.

Think about it: If simply getting to and from Baghdad's airport is tough, imagine what a chaotic, unplanned troop withdrawal will look like.  Not good.

Per OneCrankyDom over at DailyKos (emphases mine):

Harry was asked about supporting more troops after this weeks show. He was asked on a C-Span interview and he made it clear that he was not going to support more troops for anything over than cover for those troops pulling out. Short term in a way that really means no way. We need to stop jumping on Reid and Pelosi before we know exactly what they are doing. Harry is playing things a little more cagey then most give him credit for.

If anyone wonders why Reid would want 20,000 troops to cover the exit of the ones in Iraq, go Google "Chosin resevoir" to see what a "fighting retreat" looks like.

UPDATE: To prove that neither I nor Senator Reid is making up the "cover for a withdrawal" concept out of whole cloth, here's an example from 1996 of how 5,000 American troops were sent to Bosnia to cover the withdrawal of US  forces there. But of course this won't matter to the reflexive Democrat-bashers.

Who gives a fig about this Harry Reed character? Getting the soldiers out is the exact opposite of putting more in.

2 + 2 = 4.

So how will we hold Basra open long enough.... (none / 0)

...to get the troops safely out?

Again, go Google "Chosin reservoir".  We need the 20k troops to make sure we can have an orderly withdrawal, instead of a long, constant bloodbath.  Or would you prefer the bloodbath?

The main thing I found out during Vietnam was that when you put more troops in, that was not a way to get troops out. There are no indications that Bush wants to pull any troops out.

Powell rejects troop 'surge' plan for Iraq

RAW STORY
Published: Monday December 18, 2006

Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has, for the time being, rejected talk of sending more US troops into Iraq.

Appearing on this week's episode of Face the Nation, Powell told host Bob Schieffer that he agreed with the Baker-Hamilton report assessment that the situation in Iraq is "grave and deteriorating."

But the former Secretary also expressed skepticism about a plan currently being floated to send more troops into troubled areas of Iraq, stating that he is "not persuaded that another surge of troops into Baghdad for the purpose of suppressing this communitarian violence or civil war will work."

Powell also indicated he's unclear that a detailed plan actually exists, stating that clear goals would need to be set "and found realistically able to be accomplished" before he would endorse such action.

Right... (none / 0)

This is the Iraq War Resolution all over again.  The president tells them what they're voting for, and the Democrats in their apparently endless naivete believe him.  Does anyone really think we're sending more troops to withdraw?!  Withdrawal can be done without extra troops.  Withdrawal can be done with extra troops.  But the point is, those soldiers aren't being deployed to withdraw.  They will be there to stay the course.  Reid should have learned this lesson since this war began, but he's much dumber than I thought.  It's even worse than I thought if this is some kind of gamesmanship.  I know we're happy we won the majority - but Harry Reid is acting like a Bush poodle right now.

It's amazing how Democratic "leaders" have believed   Bush ever since he stole an election from them and the American people? If I didn't "know better" I'd say they're just incredibly stupid and WANT to trust him, but aren't actually in cahoots with him.

The Big Arms dealers have billions to give for campaigns. It's probably impossible to get elected without their support. The American people have conditioned by the kept media regime to trust people who have money. This is their reward for being foolish.

This sounds like the 2004 presidential campaign all over again, Kerry voted for the funding but against the funding. The Dems can't get it straight on what they really want. And I think, until they do, they will not gain the presidency. They may win the Congress, but National security is the central part of the presidential campaign, and the Dems need a coherent theme on what they want for Iraq, and if they don't they will fail again in 2008.
